Instruction for Heavy Artillery; Prepared by a Board of Officers for the Use of the Army of the United States. First Confederate Edition, Charleston: Evans and Cogswell, 1861.
The Heavy Artillery Manual is among the rarest of Confederate imprints given its heavy use during the Civil War. Adding to its rarity is the fact that it is the First Confederate Edition, printed by Evans and Cogswell in Charleston in 1861. It is essentially a reprint of the U.S. Army manual of 1840, but under distinct Confederate control. The cover is good to very good with slight scuffing, but the book is complete, with only slight staining and foxing to the pages, which is expected in a work so old. The complete set of plates (drawings) are a work of art in themselves and sought after individually by collectors. The collectibility of this first edition is unquestioned, with Richmond Second Editions going for more than this one is priced at. $1,150.00
