The Camden Confederate, Camden, SC, September 5, 1862. This may be the only issue of this date in private hands, since only two institutions are known to possess a copy. From Page 2: GREAT NEWS FROM MANASSAS, ANOTHER GLORIOUS VICTORY - SIGNAL DEFEAT OF THE COMBINED FORCES OF M'CLELLAN AND POPE. The South tells of the great victory at Second Manassas. Pretty issue with faint and non-invasive water staining. A few pinholes in page one at center and two tiny tape repairs in the spine margins of pages 2 and 3. If you want rare and historic, this issue has both. $850.00
The Daily Argus, Memphis, TN, April 2, (1862) Very rare Confederate title from Memphis. Although undated as to year, the year of 1862 is provable by the content. Fine issue with no damage, just the obligatory roughness around the edges. Rare and collectible, this title appears so seldom that acquiring it is a challenge. Only the Boston Public Library holds a copy of this date. $600.00
The Countryman, Turnwold, Putnam County, Georgia, September 29, 1862. This smaller than usual title contains more household and literary content than the newsiness of most southern newspapers. Be that as it may, it is very scarce and difficult to acquire. Bound at one time, the spine is stained, but the paper is otherwise in very good condition. $275.00
The Charleston Daily Courier, Charleston, SC, April 10, 1861. The bombardment of Fort Sumter but two days away, the dateline on page 1 of this title says it all: "Confederate States of America." The Western Sentinel, Winston, NC, June 21, 1861. This title is scarce, but not so much so as to be an impossibility to acquire, both in terms of price and availability. Nice condition with only minor foxing, with a name in the upper right corner of page 1. Good starter Confederate tiltle and early date. $175.00
The Lynchburg Virginian, Lynchburg, VA, August 6, 1864. BATTLE OF THE CRATER. This very scarce single sheet title is in superior condition and contains an account of the famous detonation of a mine under the Confederate works at Petersburg. Union troops spent a month tunneling under the works, which they filled with black powder and detonated in hopes of overrunning the Confederate defenses. Didn'tquite work to their entire satisfaction. 4,000 Union soldiers died in that debacle, with many more wounded. The headline, "SLAUGHTER OF THE NEGRO TROOPS" leads into the full-page account. Very rare title with an even rarer first account of a major battle in the Civil War. $850.00
The Western Sentinel, Winston, NC, November 7, 1862. Another of this title that has a low incidence of institutional holdings. Very good condition with normal foxing, but excellent readability. Yet another good starter Confederate title. 175.00

Quoting, "This event is a serious and an irreparable loss to the rebel army; for it is agreed on all hands that Jackson was the most brilliant rebel General developed by this war." Includes a a biography of Jackson. To have a Confederate nespaper containing a major Civil War event is the holy grail of collecting. Daily Carolina Watchman, Salisbury, NC, October 14, 1864. Very well preserved Confederate newspaper in very fine condition. Contains a lengthy report on "GRANT'S ATROCIOUS VILLANY" Also news of Union troops in pursuit of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Not available at any price, this date's lack of significant war news keeps it from the four figure range. $750.00
